Panacea Each work is a miniature cabinet of curiosities…Tiny bottles containing assemblages of natural and manufactured specimens. Each holding a secret and a cure. Each providing a promise and a hope. Inspired by a full-size medieval cope I created in 2005, these pieces capture the energy of the larger piece on a small scale. The 6’ x 3’ Apothecary’s Cope was, in turn, inspired by the nomadic medicine man in the novel The English Patient by Michael Ondatjii.

The pieces are each 12” x 20”. Their shape resembles a shield or a bustier. This form was chosen to reference the ideas of safety and protection. In a world full of sickness and brutality, everyone seeks security. However, due either to our lack of time or lack of foresight, we are constantly seeking a miracle cure rather than concentrating on prevention. The show is whimsical rather than didactic. Titles of the pieces are intended to make the viewer smile; “Ecce Homo: A Cure for Mortality”. “The Seasons: A Cure for Nostalgia”. “The Elements: A Cure for Stress”. “Alchemy: A Cure for Poverty”. Other “Cures” included are for hay fever, itchy feet, vertigo, insomnia, ennui, greed, conflict, tunnel vision, cowardice, famine, dullness, vanity, mediocrity, immodesty, stagnation, frivolity, despair, false promises, bad hair, bad manners, and bad taste. |
