1st step -- Canal Bridge Study
I have discussed the commission subject, size,
price and palette with the client. They have requested this
subject which is the bridge that separates North and South
Pender Islands. Here is the quick 11" x 14" study
which I have done to show them my concept. The final piece
will be 36" x 48".

2nd step
The entire surface of the canvas has been
underpainted in a violet / red.
3rd step
The basic design is established and some dark
tones laid in. I am referring to a photo of the bridge to
ensure accuracy of detail.
4th step
The green tones of the forest and the colours
of the rock bluff are established. Here, accuracy is not important
so I can just play in a very impressionistic way with some
lovely jewel tones.
5th step
I need some reflections suggested in the foreground
to balance the composition.
6th step
I am working on the foreground and suggesting
more movement in the water.
7th step
More detail is added to the forest and rock bluff. The midden
area at the right is more firmly established.
8th step
The colours of the sky are laid in allowing the underpainting
to come through. All of these colours will be reflected in
the foreground water.

Canal Bridge Final
Now the really fun part -- the water -- which is reflecting
every element of the painting. I have added bits of copper
paint as a final flourish but it is the violet / red of the
underpainting coming through -- the 'colour surprise' -- which
unifies the piece.
